Setting up a proxy connection for Skype on a Mac is not exactly intuitive. One would think that the proxy should be set in a preference pane of the application itself. Actually, Skype uses the proxy defined in your system's network preferences.
Here's how:
- Quit Skype if it is running.
- Click on the Apple icon in the system menu bar at the top of your screen
- Choose System Preferences...
- In the Internet & Wireless section of the System Preferences, click the Network icon.
- Make sure your Ethernet connection is selected and then click on the Advanced... button
- Click on the Proxies tab. Here, you can set proxy settings much like you would for a web browser. Set as appropriate and click OK.
- Startup Skype.
If your Skype does not connect through the proxy you configured, it is likely blocked by the firewall.
Note for VMWare Fusion users: after making these changes you may need to switch from using a Bridged connection to using the NAT connection on your VM instance.
